Event Accessibility Guidelines

All events on public property in Tacoma must adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure they are accessible to individuals with disabilities. Event organizers are responsible for making the event site accessible and inclusive for all participants. Key guidelines include:

Ensure that entrances, pathways, and any seating areas are ADA-compliant. If areas are temporarily closed or redirected, accessible alternatives must be provided.
If the event requires portable restrooms, at least one accessible unit is required per set of restrooms provided. These units must be clearly labeled and strategically placed for ease of access.
Provide sign language interpreters, captioning services, or assistive listening devices for events with spoken presentations or performances.

Best Practices for Access and Belonging

In accordance with Tacoma’s non-discrimination policies, all events must be inclusive and welcoming to individuals of all backgrounds and abilities. Discriminatory practices based on race, gender, religion, national origin, disability, age, or sexual orientation are prohibited. Organizers are encouraged to adopt practices that foster inclusivity and make accommodations for participants with specific needs.

Engage with community groups representing people with disabilities and other marginalized populations during the planning process.
Provide training on ADA compliance and non-discrimination policies to all staff and volunteers before the event.
After the event, collect feedback from attendees regarding accessibility and inclusivity to identify areas for improvement
