What are Site and Route Maps?

Site and route maps are visual tools that detail the layout of an event and its impact on surrounding areas. These maps are essential for communicating the event’s footprint to city officials, emergency personnel, and other stakeholders. They also ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, and logistical requirements​​​.


Map Format

Maps must be in electronic form and submitted as an editable PDF. 


Site Map and Route Map Requirements

Site maps provide an overview of your event footprint, including the location of key elements such as restrooms, first aid stations, and vendor booths. Route maps are required for moving events like parades and races. See below to know what both maps must clearly indicate:

General Site Map

  • NORTH, indicated by a directional arrow symbol

  • Entry and exit points

  • ADA-accessible pathways (must indicate width 4’ minimum)

  • Street names

  • Street or lane closure points

  • Requested street parking spaces

  • Emergency vehicle access/fire lane (must indicate width of 20' minimum along entire length of street closure)

  • Business or residential driveways

  • Equipment/Structures: fencing, bleachers, booths, canopies/tents, cooking areas, generators, vehicles, stage, portable restrooms, waste collection bins/stations, etc., including dimensions

  • All other setup, equipment, or structure details you think are helpful

Including Beer Garden or Other Enclosed Area in General Map

  • Fencing/barriers, including dimensions

  • Entrances and exits

  • Equipment/furniture: tables, chairs, bars, stage, etc., including dimensions

Route Maps 

For events such as parades, processions, walks/runs

  • NORTH, indicated by a directional arrow symbol

  • Route with directional arrows

  • Starting point and finishing point

  • Assembly area

  • Disbandment area

If the route map is for a race, either a walk or run, it must also include: 

  • Starting line, including structure set up 

  • Finish line, including structure set up and dispersal area

  • Street closure points and barricades

  • Location of requested TPD traffic control officers

  • Location of organizer provided flaggers

  • Other stops along the route


Submit these maps alongside the application for review by Tacoma Venues & Events.
