These events are exempt from general insurance requirements, though applicants must still confirm that they reside within the permitted area and comply with other guidelines. Verification of address may be requested.
-
Event organizers of constitutionally protected activity can request a waiver for insurance by submitting in writing a claim that it is objectively impossible to obtain insurance coverage. The applicant must also submit a statement from at least two independent licensed insurance brokers demonstrating the insurance is unavailable in the marketplace.
Even though insurance is waived, the City may require the event organizer to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the City from any claim or liability arising from the event.
Special Coverage Needs
-
Events serving alcohol may require additional insurance coverage, depending on the event’s scale and location. Consult with the Tacoma Venues & Events to confirm specific requirements.
-
Events involving activities such as fireworks, inflatables, or mechanical rides may require supplemental insurance to address the elevated risk.
Additional Tips
-
Event organizers should consult with an insurance broker familiar with event coverage to ensure all requirements are met.
-
Begin the insurance process as soon as possible to avoid delays in your application approval.
