Special Events Permitting Portal Updates
The City of Tacoma has implemented important updates to the Special Event Permitting Portal to improve accountability, transparency, and the efficiency of the permit review process. These updates establish clearer expectations, standardized requirements, and improved communication throughout the permitting lifecycle, helping event organizers move through review more smoothly and predictably.
Event organizers are encouraged to explore the permitting portal to learn more about the recent changes, understand updated deadlines and submission requirements, and access tools and resources designed to support complete, timely, and successful permit applications.
Accela: Your Permit Hub
Accela is the required system for all special event permitting materials.
All applications, site maps, Traffic Control Plans (TCPs), insurance documents, public notification materials, revisions, and permit-related communication must be submitted through the portal.
Email submissions are no longer accepted.
Automated, Action-Based Communication
Accela provides automated email notifications throughout the permitting process, including when:
Applications are received
Required documents are missing
Reviews are completed
Additional action is needed
These notifications help organizers clearly understand their status and next steps at every stage.
Firm Submittal Deadlines
To keep permits on track, the following deadlines apply:
60 days prior to the event:
Complete application, site maps, and Traffic Control Plan30 days prior for neighborhood or residential block parties
30 days prior to the event:
Insurance documentation, endorsements, and proof of public notification
Missing required deadlines may delay review or impact permit approval.
Standardized Maps & Traffic Control Plans
All site maps, route maps, and Traffic Control Plans must follow standardized labeling and formatting requirements. Submittals that are incomplete or inconsistent will be returned for revision.
Faster, More Coordinated City Reviews
Automated alerts notify City departments when reviews are needed, ensuring materials are reviewed at the appropriate time. Updated workflows help coordinate reviews across departments and partner agencies, reducing delays and last-minute requirements.
Clear Decisions & Permit Conditions
Permit decisions, conditions, required revisions, and next steps are issued directly through Accela. This provides clearer direction and helps resolve outstanding items more efficiently.
Public Notification Is Required
Proof of public notification must be uploaded into Accela no later than 30 days before the event. This requirement ensures impacted residents and businesses receive timely and consistent notice.
